The National Honor Society (NHS) is a national organization for high-achieving high school students that is based on the four pillars of scholarship, leadership, character and service. The BHSEC Baltimore Chapter of the NHS, which was founded in 2019, is open to all students in 10th grade, Y1, and Y2 with a minimum 3.0 unweighted cumulative GPA. Eligible candidates will be contacted at the start of the school year with information on how to apply. The application emphasizes the four pillars and requests a faculty reference, a personal statement, and any service or extracurricular activities in which the student has engaged thus far in high school. Once applications are submitted, a five-member faculty council will examine the applications and decide whether each candidate will be accepted. All students who apply will be notified of their decision, and an induction ceremony will take place, usually around October, to officially welcome new members into the National Honor Society. At this ceremony, students will receive their certificates and membership pins.
The National Honor Society meets once per month and aims to organize service activities to support the school and surrounding community. Four elected officers run the meetings and meet with the adviser to lead the events. In order to remain in NHS, students must maintain at least the GPA minimum, engage with the group and its activities, and avoid behavioral or academic integrity issues. Upon graduation, members in good standing will receive honor cords to represent their achievements. NHS members additionally have exclusive access to virtual college webinars and the NHS scholarship.
